The Ascension of Christ into Heaven

The light emanating from the figure of Christ is a traditional way of expressing his glorification. The cloud refers to Acts 1:9b, "while they looked on, he was raised up: and a cloud received him out of their sight." Other Ascensions that include the cloud show it obscuring Christ from view, but in this case he stands on it to echo the image of Mary's Assumption in the north chapel. The two images also correspond in putting landscapes beneath the figures and in picturing only the two figures, without any angels or human witnesses. Indeed,

Christ's crucifixion and resurrection are symbolized by the red roses in this image and the Easter lilies in the Assumption painting.
